Being as a Little Child

Sometimes we laugh at the teaching Christ gave to be as a little child. But the more I’m studying and the older my kids are getting I am seeing more and more what He meant.

A child’s heart is amazing. It’s full of love, wonder, amazement, curiosity, and creativity. These are things most adults lose, honestly throughout history not just in today’s time.

In fact, an adult that acts in such a way is often looked down on or thought of as weird because they “didn’t grow up”. But what if we’ve got it all wrong?

It’s easy for children to believe in a God because they believe anything is possible. They live in awe at trees, birds, ants, and oceans. They love stories of good vs bad and idolize heroes naturally because they genuinely want to be good too. To a child the world is a magical place and what if God made it to be so?

Have you ever learned alongside a child? Just recently my oldest has taken a fascination with ants. Have you ever studied ants?! They are absolutely insane and there are thousands of species and they do incredible things! Ants!!

Or have you ever squatted near the earth to watch a bug crawl along, listened to the trees and realized in the wind they sound like the ocean or watched birds feed near your window?

It’s not just nature that God has given us but the ability to create. Kids come up with the most fascinating things. They yearn to do crafts, music, or storytelling because they want to create something, anything.

I’ve begun telling my kids that God gave us raw materials and then inspires us to create things with it. Because He does! He created the world and must love creation so much because He encourages us to do the same.

So yes, kids are whiny, selfish, stubborn, and mean but I don’t think that’s what Christ meant. We say we’re children of God and yet we try to grow up too fast. Maybe we really can learn a thing or two from a child’s heart.
