You can find tons of lists on the Internet about the best kid’s shows or the worst ones. Kid’s shows that are overstimulating or under stimulating, teach values or don’t, the lists are endless.
So instead of telling you what you should and shouldn’t let your kids watch I just want to share what we watch and why.
Let me preface by saying we haven’t always watched the best kid’s shows. My boys were hooked on Blippi for a long time (back before Blippi was big). We had to detox them off of it! So we’ve lived and learned. We got rid of Disney+ last year partially because we didn’t want our kids watching most of the tv shows on there.
So what do we watch?
Bluey and Little Bear
And we watch them on repeat. Just those two and my kids never tire.
I know there are many other good kid shows out there but I feel that having too many options becomes overwhelming and then they want to watch tv more because there’s more to watch. (I mean I get that way too, as soon as I finish a tv series I’m looking for the next one to binge).
Last year we switched to only our kids only watching DVDs. Little Bear we do watch through YouTube since the entire series is on there for free (you can find it here). But YouTube is on the tv and we don’t have a kids youtube account. It’s mom and Dad’s and we control it (we also pay for YouTube premium and therefore don’t have ads).
Because we wanted to shift to using only DVDs and not streaming services for our kids we were gifted the entire three seasons of Bluey!
So when the kids are able to watch tv they choose between the two and have a blast.
Little Bear is such a sweet show with its slower picture and storyline. The characters are delightful and it reminds you of the books. My daughter Loves Little Bear and is often acting it out later. There are good values and life lessons shared in the show that make it safe to show the kids unsupervised.
Bluey, while more modern in its animation, is a delightful show that aligns with our values as well. We don’t worry about the kids watching it and have often referenced an episode when teaching the kids. It’s even one that my husband and I both enjoy and will watch with the kids.
What are your kid’s favorite Tv shows?
