What even is self-care? By definition self-care is: the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health or the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.
I have read so much on self-care from books, blog posts, Instagram post, articles and I thought self-care was bubble baths, nails, time away from my kids, and ice cream at night. I think we all have our own definitions of self-care and yet we all hope and say that it’s suppose to help us be our best selves.
Then why is everyone still depressed?
We’re all pushing for self-care and people are doing it yet… it doesn’t seem to be working. Does it?
I heard someone recently talk about instead of self-care we should focus on soul-care.
I like the sound of that so much more, don’t you?
To me self-care brings imagines of temporal and physical things. Maybe a little mental and emotional but soul-care, that brings pictures of heart, mind, and body care.
Soul-care to me looks more like reading good books, once that teach life lessons and good character. Listening to music that doesn’t just bring pleasure but makes you stop and feel all emotion. It’s seeing art that stirs your soul and you can relate to. It’s connecting with friends and family in meaningful ways. It’s connecting with Jesus Christ and accessing His power through repentance. It’s finding healing to traumas, growing as a soul and not just as a human.
Soul-care is eternal in consequence.
This is a growing thought, something I’m still trying to understand myself. So I’d love to hear your thoughts on self-care vs soul-care, comment below!
